Through
our alternative education programme we are able to
offer exciting and motivating educational sessions
to young people aged 13 to 19 yrs. These sessions
run for approximately 2 hours and take place either
in the morning or afternoon; they are available
throughout the week. The sessions are aimed at young
people who have difficulty fitting into mainstream
education for a variety of reasons, or have been
identified as having educational difficulties at
school.
The sessions we offer are based around a variety of
different environmental activities and include
topics such as wildlife education, horse care, llama
trekking, animal care, and the creation of natural
habitats. The activities are excellent for building
confidence and self-esteem and they are linked to
the regular certification of achievements through
the AQA accreditation system, which can be used to
build personal records of achievement. The sessions
are also ideal to support team-building skills and
nurture social skills as they are based around very
practical activities linked to the national
curriculum.
Most young people attend weekly sessions each term
and this can be pre-booked for either half a term or
a full term. Schools are welcome to book whole
sessions for up to 6 young people, or individuals
can call and book independently. Some schools and
young people may be eligible for subsidised sessions
– please contact the centre for further information.
This project is supported by Blackburn with Darwen
Connexions and therefore subsidies may be
available to beneficiaries living within the
borough. Young people outside the borough can also
be supported on our programmes, but funding for this
must be from independant sources or schools.
